AHOY Sailing and Rowing: Transforming Lives in Deptford, Greenwich & Lewisham
- Education
KCCF were delighted to set sail with AHOY at their supporters' day last week to witness how are our funding is helping to support local underprivileged young people.
The AHOY Centre, a sailing and rowing charity based on the River Thames in Deptford, continues to make waves not just in the water but also in the local community. With a mission to empower disadvantaged young people and those with disabilities, AHOY has become a beacon of hope for many in South London.
KCCF is proud to support AHOY’s flagship program, Sailability, with a 3-year small grant towards a mentoring scheme for young people aged 18+ with physical and learning disabilities and those with mental health issues. AHOY also offers programmes for young people aged 8 and above through their Sailing for All programme as well as Boats Afloat, Shipmates Weekend Club and apprenticeships. These initiatives provide young people with valuable life skills, boosting confidence and self-esteem and opening pathways to higher education and employment.
We were privileged to visit the charity and hear from current and former beneficiaries as well as volunteers detailing the hugely rewarding work and experiences. It was inspiring to hear how AHOY has helped hundreds of individuals find purpose, develop skills and resilience and transform their lives. We also enjoyed a powerboat trip down the Thames, to experience AHOY in action!
AHOY aims to break down barriers and show that the river is for everyone and that it’s not just about learning to sail; it’s about creating opportunities and building a community of support and belonging.
AHOY celebrated its 20th anniversary last year: two decades of delivering Adventure, Hope & Opportunities to Young people in south-east London. Through its impactful work, the charity is not only nurturing a love for water sports but also steering the lives of many toward brighter horizons for many years to come.
