Fauna and Flora International
- Environment
In 2019, The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund awarded Fauna and Flora International (F&FI) £299,945 for a three year project to restore Sombrero Island in Anguilla – a UK overseas territory.
Sombrero Island and Marine Park is an area of outstanding biological and cultural importance which has been under pressure from the invasion of alien species, extreme weather events (including two hurricanes) and a rise in sea level. Fauna and Flora International is working to conserve the wildlife on the island by
- Eradicating alien species, such as mice
- Reintroducing native flora and fauna to the island
- Monitoring wildlife
- Creating a well-managed, protected area which is supported by and benefits the people of Anguilla
So far, F&FI have introduced eleven new plant species, eradicated all mice and launched a boat – the Corvina – to patrol and protect the marine park.
More information about the project can be found on the F&FI website here.
